Bio: The Paulsons were homesteaders from Missouri who made their way west in hopes of a better life. Like so many of their contemporaries, they were sorely disappointed. Hard living and illness took it's slow toll on small family, and by the time they reached their allotted land only three of their five original children remained. Still, the Paulsons settled down with every intention of succeeding despite their setbacks. They farmed hard and long for eight years, and were slowly carving a home for themselves out of the untamed land, with their children as farmhands, when fever struck.
It wiped out the entire family (of eight) in less than two years. Gertie was the only one to survive. Her father, before his passing, had written to family in the west concerning his (then two) remaining children, and had received, many months later, notification that they would indeed adopt their young relatives, as long as the children were healthy and willing to work. Father Paulson then sold his remaining property to the neighbors for a pittance, and used the money to buy his children passage west.
But it was still not enough, even though (or maybe because) Gertie's brother died in town shortly before setting out. With nowhere to go and no one willing to take her on, Gertrude continued her slow journey west, taking odd jobs where she could and starving when she couldn't. After many months, she has arrived in Sedona with every intention of scraping up enough money for a train ride west.
